CSCW23 in Minneapolis

October 18, 2023

I just finished my first CSCW after 3 days of very interesting talks, meeting many people, and discussing ideas and concerns related to HCI, tech, and policy. I'm really happy to have met such a wonderful and welcoming community at  CSCW23.

Overall it was a great conference, with many interesting topics. However, even though many people are calling for a connection between HCI and policy, I never cease to be surprised that there is still a great gap. It is good to know that aiming to bridge HCI and policy domains and working at that intersection makes sense.

Personal highlights:
  • During the conference, Yeonju and I presented our first collaboration about anonymity in VR: Are You Anonymous? Inferring Personal Information from Nonverbal Behavior Data Tracked in Immersive Virtual Reality. Even though VR is not our main focus right now, it was amazing to see the great reception we got and talk about potential future work on this.
  • I participated in the Community-Driven AI in which we had a wonderful discussion on how to improve our engagement with communities when doing research. Relevant challenges were the sustainability of interventions and aligning incentives of different stakeholders.  However, it was amazing to meet such a great community, and I hope we will continue working on these challenges.
  • I participated in the Purposeful AI special interest group, and we had an amazing discussion, very related to the workshop, on how to work and consider the impact on the communities we work with when designing AI-based solutions.
Some papers I really liked:
